When I first tried to get back into music it was deep lockdown. I’d been listening to a bit of dark synth stuff and set out to work within the genre, but the result was a muddy mess. I quickly decided to ignore genre and just make something that I enjoyed, which naturally ended up being much more ambient. Outside of those constraints, the lack of polish was part of the point, and I reveled in it.
But I never lost the urge to make a darkwave track. I made a few half-hearted attempts, but it wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I felt confident enough to try in earnest. This is the result, and I’m really happy with it.
A lot of what I was missing early on did come down to mixing. My mixes 4 years ago were atrocious. Kick drums were inaudible below a dogpile of instruments mixing into that ugly brown you get from too many crayon colors. But it also came down to song structure. There are implicit rules and tricks we’re all subconsciously aware of as listeners that I was clueless about.
Anyway, this was a super gratifying exercise. I don’t know if I’d like to keep aping genres, but it’s good to know I have the tools.
THIS IS MY JAM ❤️❤️❤️
